THE CHECK SUIT
Long since adopted for town and business wear, checked suiting started life in the country. The Glen Urquhart check has Scottish provenance, being one of the 'district checks' of 19th century Scotland; a large black and white check greatly admired and adapted with various colour overchecks and referred to as Price of Wales check.
There is a sophistication in the subtle dark pattern that from a distance has a modest appearance yet up close has noteworthy detail of colour, pattern and texture. Enduringly stylish, this woolen fabric with a woven twill design of small and large checks, can look truly spohisticated when skilfully cut (there is an undisputed complexity in tailoring checks with horizontal and vertical lines that must match) and closely tailored for a more fitted suit.
Solid coloured shirts and a subtly patterned tie will always be the smart choice for accessorizing as this lets the check speak for itself. Alternatively, for one not intimidated by matching patterns, to amplify the look try a lightly checked or striped shirt with a subtly patterned tie.
Ideal for autumn winter, we would recommend a suiting cloth of wool or wool/cashmere blend as the richness of these fabrics fully complements the check pattern.
