New Website. New Tailoring Services. New Online Shop.

New_online_shop

It seems like only yesterday that we last wrote. And yet, it was in fact over three weeks ago. Time flies when you are having fun, so the saying goes, and we have been having fun. When you embark on a new project, nobody reminds you that there’s a whole heap of detail to look over do they? So it’s been ‘head-down’ and ‘focus’.

The door to our new online shop and website opened this week and we’re excited. We think you’ll like it. We thought it completely appropriate at this time, with the USA Peter Johnston at Saks launch and the extension of our bespoke tailoring services in Scotland, to give ourselves a crash course in who we are and what we do, and then re-fresh our website to share that with you. A good number of our friends already know about our hand crafted ties, cashmere scarves and other luxury accessories and have entrusted us with their sartorial elegance from the showroom. Well sometimes, you just need to quick-shop to complement your busy life so we’ve put together a collection of accessories for purchasing online.

Reassuringly, our online products are still beautifully made in our signature style of craftsmanship and quality – we’ve simply made it hassle-free to purchase them from the moment you place your order to when the postie delivers your parcel. It just makes sense – doesn’t it?

And thanks for all your interest and support; we’re pleased to be back in contact with you.

NEW! - OUR UNIQUE 3D DESIGN TOOL - BESPOKE SLIPPER SHOES

Velvet_slippers_for_men

NEW! - We have just launched our unique 3D bespoke design tool. Less predictable than moccasins and more smart-casual than a lot of summer shoes, our slipper shoes with leather soles can be both elegant and fun. Every pair of slipper shoes is made to order so each pair is a one-off. You can reflect your own taste by designing your own personalized shoes: you select your materials, colours and embroidered motifs or monograms and see your selections instantaneously in the form of a 3D slipper. Slipper shoes can be a casual yet elegant look, a true mix of formal and informal. Popularized by Prince Albert, these pull-on lace less shoes became Hollywood favourites in the 1940s and 1950s. Originally worn whenever there was dancing, today they look elegant worn with your formalwear or everyday-dapper with your jeans or linen trousers.

FOCUS ON FOOTWEAR | ABC OF YOUR SHOE #2

(download)

The internal and external shape of your shoe is determined by the last used to craft it. As we mentioned in ABC #1, the last is the shoe makers wooden model that takes the place of a foot during the production phases. You've probably noticed that the shoes we offer have different last identifications, for example 358 or 337. The differences between them are primarily in the shape of the toe caps. The same last can be used to make many styles but toe shape and heel height will be the same for each pair made on that last. If you like your shoe collection to have different toe shapes, simply favour more than one last. There is a saying: "If the shoe fits, the foot is forgotten" so it's good to know that the lasts used for our welted shoes are better shaped for increased comfort.

SPRING CHUKKA

Classic chocolate brown suede chukka boots that exemplify light weight, versatile spring style. Unlined, these boots are softer and lighter than their winter cousins. It's like the difference between wearing your winter bespoke jackets and your unlined cardigan jackets for spring summer: softer, lighter and unbelievably comfortable for the season. Originally adopted by polo players who required its characteristic combination of support and agility, the chukka has become our favourite boot for everyday spring wear. With its leather sole, which incidentally has the advantage of absorbing moisture during the day, the chukka ticks all the right boxes for both a relaxed yet slightly formal feel and true weekend casual.

FOCUS ON FOOTWEAR | ABC OF YOUR SHOE #1

You've probably heard us talk about Goodyear Welted shoes; Ever wondered what this means? The finest shoes today continue to incorporate the "British Goodyear Welted" construction. When you wear your Crocket & Jones shoe purchased from us, that's exactly what you get. A traditional method of craftsmanship that borrows its name from the inventor who devised the hand sewn method, the essence of the construction is that the leather upper is shaped over the 'last' and secured by the 'welt' (the last is an abstract copy of the foot in wood that takes the place of a foot during the production phases). The welt is a strip of leather, on average 2 feet long, three-quaters of an inch wide and an eighth of an inch thick (60 cm x 2 cm x 3 mm). Along with the cobblers thread used to stitch the welt, it is the supporting structure of your shoe. The welt holds the upper, insole and sole together.

For you, there are four main benefits to wearing Goodyear Welted shoes:

  1. Comfort - your shoe has a cavity between the inner and outer sole filled with a flexible compound that quickly moulds to the shape of your foot.
  2. Insulation - the sandwiched compound between inner and outer soles provides thermal insulation and protection from uneven surfaces for added comfort.
  3. Strength - by combining comfort and durability your welted shoes have strength, performance and good shape retention.
  4. Easy to repair - as long as the upper of your shoe remains sound, it is easy to re-sole your welted shoes by sewing new soles to the existing welts.

Over the following weeks we'll share with you what we know about the construction of your shoes, the skill of the craftsmen and the fine detailing to reach the final wax polishing: a highly skilled process that can take up to ten weeks for each shoe.
