THE CIVILIZED SHOPPER'S GUIDE

(download)

There's a plentiful contingent of rugby fans heading to Edinburgh this weekend for Scotland v Wales at Murrayfield Stadium. Now, anyone who knows us well knows better than to strike up any deep and meaningful conversation about the sport in question but they obviously consider us fair game for an insight into the city's attractions.

So we have happily been directing people to the best hotels, restaurants, landmarks and golf courses but when it comes to shopping we thought, who better to guide them through the streets of the Old and New Town than the author June Skinner Sawyers with her lovely book 'THE CIVILIZED SHOPPER'S GUIDE TO Edinburgh and Glasgow'? We recommended to friends this absolute gem of a book that is written as a walking guide (perfect for weekenders) and celebrates shops that have a strong Scottish and/or United Kingdom connection and "because there is something about the shop - an intangible quality - that appealed to me" says the author (Thank You June!).

Bespoke tailoring

When it comes to top-drawer tailoring there is nobody quite like Peter Johnston, who has brought classic British style and tailoring to Scotland-true Brit, you might say. Forget Savile Row, visit instead this dapper Scot in the lovely Georgian house from which he and his impeccably groomed wife, Judy, now run the tailoring business, as well as selling luxury goods for men. Immediately, you are in a world of fast cars and sexy speedboats (Johnston collects and displays black-and-white photographs of Formula One racing), a world in which the sartorially sussed will discuss at length the cut of a tweed jacket, a world in which a suave CEO will try on his perfect bespoke suit and place his pocket handkerchief just so. The charming Johnston, once design director at Kilgour and Dunhill menswear, was the first Scot to graduate with a master’s degree in menswear from the Royal College of Art in 1995. Johnston’s designs are sold in six Isetan stores in Japan, and he now has a ready-to-wear label in association with Onward Kashiyama, which has been a major success.
